Scott Sadowsky - Linguistics in Chile
I'm Scott Sadowsky, professor of linguistics at the Universdad de La Frontera in Temuco, Chile.
My main research interests are sociolinguistics, phonetics and corpus linguistics, more or less in that order. The common thread is a strong empirical focus. My latest project, the Sociolinguistic Corpus of Spoken Chilean Spanish (Coscach), unites all of these approaches.
My research centers on a relatively under-studied variety of Spanish -- Chilean Spanish. There's nothing quite as intriguing as finding mysteries in plain sight. Recently, I've also been working on Mapudungun, an indigenous language isolate spoken in Chile and part of Argentina.
I've taught subjects ranging from Praat and palatography to critical discourse analysis. This semester, I'm teaching Sociolinguistics and Phonetics here at UFRO.
I also do extension -- bringing the goodness of linguistics to the general public, by way of ¡Usted sí lo dice!, a blog hosted by cognitive science and humanities site Tercera cultura.
